Fields of Mistria turns ordinary actions into long-term choices through skills and perks. Farming, fishing, mining, archaeology, cooking, ranching, woodcrafting, blacksmithing, and combat all reward repetition, but the best choice is not always the skill with the most attractive number. It is the skill that removes the obstacle you meet most often. This hub helps you select a useful next perk, prepare tools and forge work, and connect mining or combat to the rest of your save.

Scope: Steam AppID 2142790 base game, public 1.0 branch, Windows and SteamOS + Linux. The official 1.0 notes confirm nine broad skill areas and new Cooking, Ranching, and Woodcrafting perks. Exact perk values and unlock timing should be checked in the current menu.

Diagnose the obstacle first

Before opening a skill menu, name the problem in a sentence. “The morning farm route is too long,” “I cannot finish the mine route,” “I lack a meal for a long trip,” or “I am missing a collection item” leads to a better choice than simply spending an available perk point. Skills improve different loops, and a point that looks efficient in isolation can be wasted if you rarely perform that activity.

Use Skills and Perks for the decision itself. Use Tools and Blacksmithing when the bottleneck is tool access, material processing, or stamina cost. Use Mining and Combat when the goal is deeper exploration, safer monster encounters, or mine-room recovery. These pages keep the same system from becoming three copies of one generic tier list.

Nine activities, different payoffs

Farming supports crops and ingredients; Fishing supports food, gifts, and collections; Mining supplies ore and a route into combat; Archaeology turns excavation into collection progress; Cooking converts ingredients into travel support; Ranching creates animal products and relationship work; Woodcrafting and Blacksmithing turn materials into usable tools or objects; Combat makes hostile mine rooms less costly. The current Skills reference names these activities, while the official 1.0 notes confirm that perks expanded several of them at full release.

Do not level every activity equally just because the menu presents them together. Pick one main engine, one support activity, and one activity tied to your next unlock. For example, a farm-focused save may pair Farming with Cooking and Ranching. A Museum-focused save may pair Fishing or Archaeology with a seasonal route. A mine-focused save may pair Mining, Combat, and Blacksmithing. The choice can change after a tool upgrade or a Town unlock.

How to choose a perk

Read the full description, not only the title. Ask four questions: does the perk affect an action I perform every week, does it save stamina or time, does it unlock a new route, and does it require another system to pay off? A perk that improves animal products is weak for a save that rarely visits the ranch but valuable for a Ranching collection goal. A combat perk can be excellent when a mine route is the direct gate to story progress and unnecessary when the next objective is a festival.

Keep a short record of the choice and the problem it was meant to solve. After two or three in-game days, check whether the route actually changed. If not, the recovery is usually to adjust the route or food plan rather than immediately spend another resource to compensate. Perks should simplify decisions, not create a second spreadsheet.

Tools, materials, and the forge

Tools are the physical expression of skill progress. An upgraded tool can reduce a repeated cost, expose a new material, or make a route practical. The tools page covers the preparation order: inspect the upgrade requirement, keep materials that also belong to a request or Museum set, choose a day when the tool will not block a time-sensitive task, and test the new action before expanding the route.

Blacksmithing and Woodcrafting are not only decoration systems. They translate mine and forest materials into items that support farming, storage, exploration, or home improvement. The 1.0 notes added Woodcrafting perks and new furniture, but the notes do not establish one universal production order. If a recipe competes with a Town request or an animal item, write down the tradeoff before consuming the material.

Mining and combat as one route

Mining creates two related problems: stamina and danger. Combat preparation should therefore include food, the current equipment screen, a return point, and a reason for entering the mine. The Mining and Combat guide focuses on room decisions, not a damage ranking. In a safe room, collect the material that advances the stated goal. In a hostile room, clear the threat before committing to a long animation or a corner. If a run fails, record whether the issue was health, mana, tool damage, route length, or an enemy pattern.

The official 1.0 notes mention improved mine treasure drops, adjusted ritual and treasure room rates, a final mine biome, and a Combat perk that can produce monster pet skins. Those are versioned facts, not a promise that every run has the same reward. Keep the public version beside any mine advice and recheck after a patch.

Skill plans for common goals

  • First farm season: Farming first, then a support choice that shortens chores or improves ingredients.
  • Town progress: use a flexible farm and request route; choose the skill that supplies the next delivery rather than a distant endgame perk.
  • Museum progress: combine a collection activity with storage discipline, then use tools to reach missing sources.
  • Mine story: pair Mining with Combat and a material-processing path; carry a recovery plan instead of spending every morning underground.
  • Romance: keep one cooking, fishing, or farming route that supplies gifts without interrupting Town tasks.

These are starting patterns, not rankings. If your save has a different bottleneck, follow the diagnosis method and choose the action that changes tomorrow’s route.
