Choose the NPC or friendship goal, check the current preference evidence, reserve one item before the date, and deliver it as part of a town route. Birthdays deserve an earlier check because a seasonal ingredient or kitchen recipe may need preparation before the morning arrives.
Choose a repeatable gift
Start with an item whose source fits the route you already use. A farm crop can work for a farm-focused save, a fish can work for a river route, and a cooked meal can work when the kitchen is already part of the plan. Do not choose a gift that consumes the only ingredient for a request, a Museum set, or your travel food. If a preference is uncertain, use a low-risk item and record the result rather than spending a rare item to test a rumor.
The Relationships hub separates gifts from heart events and marriage because the decision is different. A gift page answers what to carry today. A heart-event page answers which state or location comes next. A marriage page answers what the 1.0 milestone changes.
Prepare before a birthday
Look ahead at the season and source. If the gift can be harvested, caught, cooked, or bought, make the route one or two days early. Store the finished item in a clearly marked chest. If the gift uses a recipe, confirm the kitchen tier and ingredient reserve before cooking. If it is a Museum or request item, compare the destinations before committing.
On the birthday, do the farm actions that cannot wait first, then travel with the gift and one backup activity. A conversation, request, or shop visit can share the same route. If the intended item is unavailable, give the repeatable fallback or continue the relationship on a later day; selling a unique seasonal item to force one gift can create a larger problem.
Read preference evidence correctly
Community gift tables are useful for finding candidates, but their labels can reflect an older update or an incomplete translation. Keep the exact source and check date next to any favorite or loved-item claim. Use the NPC’s current dialogue, heart response, and the game’s item behavior as the final evidence. Do not turn a single guide’s “favorite” wording into an official list.
If two current sources disagree, publish the disagreement as a lookup limit rather than guessing. A dependable neutral gift is better than a confident but wrong rare gift. The official 1.0 notes confirm expanded relationship content, not every character preference.
Fit gifts into a weekly route
Choose one or two relationship days each week. Pair a gift with a Town request or shop route, and pair a fishing or gathering gift with the collection route it already supports. Keep the other days for farm, mine, or repair goals. This prevents gifts from taking every afternoon while leaving the relationship route no closer to its next event.
When a festival or date puts NPCs together, use it for conversation and observation, but check the current event text. A festival can change locations or schedules. If a gift does not produce the expected response, record the item, date, and context and return to a safer route rather than repeating the same expensive mistake.
Recover from a missed birthday
Missing a birthday is not a reason to restart automatically. Record the next known date, preserve a repeatable gift, and continue ordinary conversation. If a seasonal item was lost, plan its next source through Crops and Seasons or Fish and Bugs once those focused pages are available.
