Archaeology sets turn excavation into a planned route through Fields of Mistria. Before digging, decide whether the goal is a Museum item, a Town request, a crafting material, or simply learning the area. Keep an unusual find unassigned until you have checked all four destinations. Rare-looking does not always mean Museum, and a community screenshot may belong to an older set or branch.
Choose an excavation goal
Open the Museum and select an incomplete set, then note the missing category or item. If the item is not visible, choose a material or quest goal instead of digging randomly. Carry the appropriate tool, leave room in storage, and combine the trip with a mine, town, or collection route. Set a stopping point before entering the area so a successful find does not turn into a wasted late return.
The Collections hub gives the set-first plan. Mining and Combat helps when the excavation area overlaps a hostile route. Town helps when a request uses the same material. These are supporting decisions, not duplicate archaeology pages.
Store before you identify everything
Create a reserve for confirmed Museum pieces and a temporary box for unassigned finds. Before donating, check the kitchen, request board, forge, and relationship route. Separate “found” from “donated” because a duplicate may have a different use. Once a set is complete, remove its reserve only after checking whether the reward supports another goal.
If an item is not accepted by the Museum, do not force it into an archaeology list. Check the current item description and version. It may be a material, quest object, or a different collection category. The official 1.0 notes confirm a completable Museum and new Honey and Terrarium Treasures sets, so older checklists may be partial.
Combine archaeology with another day
An excavation day works best when the route also produces mine materials, fish, bugs, forage, or a town delivery. Carry food and tools only for the route you can complete. If the item is seasonal, mark the next window and use the current day on another set. If the tool cost is high, return after the target appears instead of clearing every possible tile.
Use the current Seasons reference for seasonal context and the in-game Museum for accepted items. Community pages can reveal terminology, but they do not prove a complete list or a universal source. Keep an observation date beside any detailed route.
Recovery after a wrong dig
If you sold a find, note its source and keep the next one. If a request and Museum set compete, complete the destination with the clearer deadline and reserve the replacement. If a route contains a crash or the item is missing, record the public version, platform, location, and action before reporting it. The Updates hub tracks official 1.0 and v1.0.2 changes.
Review the temporary archaeology box after each Museum visit. Move confirmed donations out, move items with a request into the active basket, and leave genuinely unknown finds untouched. This three-way sort keeps excavation useful without pretending that every unusual object already has a documented set membership.
If a set remains incomplete for a long time, change the source route rather than digging every day. Check whether the missing category is seasonal, tied to a mine layer, or dependent on a Town unlock. Record the evidence and return to a farm or relationship route while the prerequisite develops.
This keeps the collection goal visible without sacrificing every other progression system.
Return to the set only when the prerequisite is ready or the next excavation route also advances another goal.
The official Steam News and Steam Store were checked 2026-08-09. Unknown fields remain deliberately unfilled until current evidence supports them.
